In August 1995, we posted a note to the network informing our users that the SEC and Patent databases would terminate in 60 days. We sent letters to the government agencies and called the newspapers. The outcry was not inconsiderable. Here is the information we posted on the net.

By October 1, 1995, the SEC had done a full turnaround. Using a computer it borrowed from us, the agency became enthusiastic supporters of the project. Now running with a sophisticated MIS operation, the service transfers millions of documents per month. Here is their service.

The Patent Office dug in its heals. They posted a trivial set of abstracts and a few full documents, but the Commissioner of Patents felt that protection of the retail information industry was a key part of his job.
