Higher and Higher!
The weather continues to cooperate with us and as we get higher and higher up
the mountain, the views just keep getting better!
Christian and Jonas completed a second carry from Camp 1 yesterday. They
arrived at Camp 2 at midnight and pitched camp below a 300 metre icefall under
a stunning night sky. It is light 20 hours a day here, and at midnight, the
moon was up over King Peak while the sky over the St. Elias Mountains was a
glowing red. It was a real advantage moving at night because of the cooler
night temperatures. During the day, we've had temperatures of up to 25 degrees
(C), with intense sunshine. We are certainly going through a great deal of
sunscreen!
Early this morning, while it was a frosty -22 degrees (C), Christian called in
to do an interview with the morning show at CBC Radio in the Yukon. This was
followed, later in the day, by an interview with Jay Ingram at the Discovery
Channel. The early morning interview was quite a challenge as it is no small
feat keeping all of the scientific equipment warm at night. It usually means
that someone has to sleep with the laptop computer and an MSAT Communicator
battery!
The rest of the Team skied back down to Base Camp to pick up extra food,
arriving at Camp 2 at about 2:00 pm today. We will all stay at Camp 2 tonight
and return to Camp 1 tomorrow to haul the last of our gear up. One of the joys
of arduously working our way up the mountain is the effortless ski down through
fresh powder!
We are sending a photo of John-David at Camp 2. He is working on the MSAT
Communicator, provided by TMI Communications, which allows us to send back
these reports and images, as well as make calls and transmit our data to the
Heart Institute.
Our best wishes to everyone.
Cheers from the Logan Team!
