Expedition Co-Leaders:
Christian Otto, a 28-year-old native of Kingston, is a third-year medical student and
a kinesiology graduate of the University of Ottawa. He has climbed throughout the Canadian
Rockies and competed nationally and internationally in both cycling and biathalon. He is
currently completing his private pilot's license. Along with his duties as co-leader, he
will be coordinating the research activities during the expedition.
Craig Hare, a systems analyst at Shakti Consulting, earned his computer science
degree from the University of Guelph. Craig has led a successful high altitude expedition
in the Himalayas and has climbed extensively in the Canadian Rockies. Originally from
Toronto, this 29-year-old is an accomplished paddler, scuba diver and outdoor leader. He
has competed in sailing, cycling and cross-country skiing, and has mountain-biked through
Australia and New Zealand.
Team Members:
Dr. Jonas Sandstrom, a native of Sweden, is a 27-year-old Family Practice Resident in
Prince George, B.C., after obtaining his medical degree from the University of Western
Ontario. Jonas has a special interest in sports medicine and recently organized the medical
services for the B.C. Winter Games. Jonas is also a cross-country skier and cyclist. In
addition to his duties as the expedition's Team Physician, he will be conducting research
into the effects of high altitude on exercise performance.
Robert Grondin is the clinical coordinator of the Neurodiagnostic Unit of the Ottawa
Civic Hospital. Rob holds a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education from the University of
Ottawa, a Master of Science degree in biomechanics, and a degree in Education from Queen's
University. A 33-year-old Ottawa native, Rob has competed nationally and internationally
in rowing, and is an avid hiker and paddler.
John-David Hare is an 18-year-old North York high school student who grew up in
Toronto. John-David has climbed in the Canadian Rockies and has completed several paddling
trips in the Canadian North. He has also taught rock climbing, canoeing and outdoor skills
for several years.
Andrew Henry a 26-year-old native of Ottawa, is a kinesiology graduate from the
University of Guelph. In addition to travelling throughout India, Asia and New Zealand,
Andrew has competed nationally in rugby and captained the University of Guelph Rugby Team.
Research Consultant:
Dr. Andrew Pipe is an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa and is a member
of the division of Cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Dr.
Pipe is a member of the Premier's Council on Health, Well-Being and Social Justice for the
Province of Ontario and serves as Team Physician to the Canadian Alpine Ski Team and the
Canadian National Basketball Team. Dr. Pipe has also served as Chief Medical Officer to
the Canadian Olympic Team in Barcelona. In addition to being the principle research advisor
to the '96 Mount Logan Expedition for Heart, Dr. Pipe will be coordinating the telemedicine
communications activity during the expedition, at the Ottawa Heart Institute.
Expedition Consultant
James Hargreaves
is a professional expedition consultant best known for organizing the 1982 British K2
expedition and the International Ice Walk North Pole expedition. James was also one of the
first persons to paddle around Cape Horn in a Sea Kayak. Currently, James is guiding in
Wales. The Logan '96 Expedition is extremely grateful for his generous contributions.
