aiming for the top

An Overview of the Mission

The ’96 Mount Logan Expedition for Heart is a scientific expedition and a part of the University of Ottawa's 20th Anniversary celebrations. The Expedition's aim is to conduct medical research during the course of an alpine ascent of Mount Logan which, at 5959 metres, is Canada's highest mountain.

The six mountaineers on the expedition are allowing four weeks to complete their journey which involves traversing 30 kilometres of glaciated terrain and ascending 3120 metres to reach the summit. During their ascent, the climbers will experience a loss of oxygen in the air they are breathing, and at times they will be breathing air with less than one-half the oxygen content of that at sea level.

The scientific portion of the expedition will study the effects of altitude on the heart, including the way in which the climber's hearts are affected by the lower level of oxygen available to them. Medical data and details of the climber's heart activity will be transmitted regularly via satellite from Mount Logan, to the Ottawa Heart Institute 4,000 kilometres away, demonstrating the technology and potential of "telemedicine". The team also expects to transmit written, verbal and visual accounts of their ascent towards the summit. We hope you will visit the website regularly and take advantage of this opportunity to follow the mountaineers towards their ultimate goal: the highest point in Canada.

Mount Logan is located in the Yukon Territory, 300 kilometres east of Whitehorse. It is part of the St. Elias Mountains, the highest coastal range in the world, and is one of the planet's most remote, stormswept and inhospitable locations. Mount Logan boasts the largest massif and the second highest vertical rise of any peak in the world and, combined with the lattitude and cold temperatures, it's landscape is comparable to the Himalayas and Antarctic.
