Matsuyama bullfighting
Togyu

If you visit Uwajima, you can enjoy impressive bullfighting.

In the Uwajima town that is an hour and twenty minutes from Matsuyama by Express "Shiokaze", you can enjoy dynamic bullfighting. Unlike bullfighting between a matador and a bull in Andalusia of Spain, two bulls fight each other. Bullfighting is convened four times a year at the municipal bullfighting yard at Tenmayama. This is very famous as a valiant event in Uwajima comparable with dogfighting in Tosa.

Using the sumo style, Yokozunas, Ozekis, and Sekiwakes of East and West fight in the ring. There are about twenties Yokozunas and many Ozekis and Sekiwakes listed. However, ranking is all right. A Yokozuna never loses against a Sekiwake. Bulls at the age of six to seven are strongest and the weight of a large bull is over 800 kg. Fighting between two big bodies with their horns pushing hard is an exciting view. In a regular event, you can enjoy eleven or twelve breathtaking matches. Owners of these bulls usually train their wonderful fighters by trecking, etc. A week before the match, the bulls are treated with splendid menus including sake, beer, and raw eggs to reinforce the bulls' power.
