Matsuyama Iyo Manzai

Listen to an Iyomanzai song called "Matsuzukushi."

A team of Iyo Manzai is led by a Tayu wearing the crested haori and hakama. This team consists of four dancers, a Saizo, and a funny Jiromatsu. Shamisen and Taiko players wear the same clothes as the Tayu and play music on the back side of the stage. On a traditional stage, young men wearing female clothes act as the Tayu, Saizo, and Jiromatsu. Presently, kids act these roles on the stage but they are directing popular favor with gorgeous clothes and high-tempo music.

Sadayuki Matsudaira who was the load of the Matsuyama clan invited Manzai Tayus from Osaka as an event for new year celebration. This was the origin of Iyo Manzai. In 1806, which was approximately 150 years later, a funny-dancing Jiromatsu was added and became popular. After the Meiji Restoration, Kamekichi Sawada alone inherited this art. Shiki Masaoka who enjoyed the Kamekichi's Iyo Manzai made a haiku; "Hope to show Kamekichi's Manzai as the pride of this country".
