Tosa Token (Dogfight)
Tosa Token (Dogfight)
It is said that Baneki Otakasaka, a native of Tosa, once bought in
bulldog from Nagasaki, the ancestor of today's Tosa fighting dogs.
Careful breeding over many generations has bequeathed
these dogs' sturdy build and violent fighting spirit.
The strong appeal of token can only be appreciated
by attending a live performance. The champion dog is designated
yokozuna, a dignity that outshines the yokozuna title
of sumo wrestlers.

Tosa Onagadori (Long-Tailed Cock)
In the Yedo-era procession of the Tosa daimyu,
the standard bearer carried an otorige
(an ornamental pike decorated at its head with the tail feather of
the onagadori) to demonstrate the daimyo's power.
The onagadori is a rare bird, a cross between
a pheasant and a totenko (brown domestic fowl).
Its tail can be up tp 10 meters long. The bird has been designated
as a protected species.
