Ryoma Sakamoto, a patriot of the Ishin (Restoration period), forged the alliance between Satsuma-han and Choshu-han that opened the door to the modernization of Japan. His magnanimous character was formed in the climate of Tosa, open to the sea. His openness, cheerfulness, and humor are exactly the characteristics of the people in Tosa today. Igossou in Tosa dialect describes the obstinate and uncompromising nature of Tosa people and is said to have been formed by the natural environment distinguished by its convoluted topography, surrounded by bright sea and steep mountains, generally mild climate punctuated by violent typhoons. When you have a chance to visit Kochi, please get to know the Tosa beyond just its startling views and delicious foods. You may be able to meet with today's Ryoma Sakamoto in the streets, at the seaside, or on a mountain path.
