Yosakoi Matsuri (Festival)

Yosakoi Matsuri (Festival) The words of the song are "Kochi no joka e kite miiya. Jinma mo banba mo yoh odoru. Naruko ryote ni yoh odoru." ("Come to the castle town of Kochi and see. Even old men and women like to dance with clappers in both hands."). Yosakoi Matsuri is an annual midsummer festival that has been held for more than 40 years in Kochi City, celebrating the energetic spirit of the Tosa people. In recent years, many more young people have participated. The basic style is to dance to yosakoibushi ("festival songs") with clappers in hands, but any variation is allowed, elements of samba and rock. You will see people wearing yukata (the classic Japanese bathrobe) and happi (a livery coat) with sugegasa (a straw hat) as well as showy T-shirts. During the three days that the dancers take over the streets, shunting aside pedestrians and cars, the enthusiasm you will feel rivals that felt in the Carnival of Rio or the New Orleans Mardi Gras.
