War Memorial

War Memorial is a place recently opened in June, 1994. The construction of this war memorial began in September, 1990 and was established to teach future generations lessons from history and wars in the past.
Built on 116,793 square meters of space, the war memorial includes several indoor exhibition halls as well as an outdoor exhibition area. There are about 13,600 items on display.
Historical military records and relics dating from the Three-Kingdom Period to the present are on display in six major rooms: Memorial Hall, the War History Room, the Korean War Room, the Expeditionary Forces Room, the Armed Forces Room and the Large Equipment Room.
Large-scale weapons from many countries all over the world are on display in the Outdoor Exhibition Area along with a replica of the Tombstone of the Great King Kwanggaeto, the Statue of Brothers (symbolizing the Korean War), and many others.
There are also the exhibit of the Military Items of the Korea Defense Industry, the Hall of Miniature Weapons, and the Special Event Exhibition Hall.
The indoor exhibition halls and the outdoor exhibition area are connected by an open-air corridor, along which stand a series of stone monuments inscribed with the names of the Korean soldiers killed in action during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. With an artificial pond and wooden areas around the central plaza, the memorial offers a good resting place for citizens of Seoul.

Yongsan Family Park

Yongsan Family Park was opened to the Korean public for the first time in 110 years in November, 1992. The land was held first by the Japanese following the Imo Military Revolt in 1882.
It was then loaned to the U.S. 8th Army at the end of the period of Japanese colonial rule (1910-1945).
It was formerly the site of the 8th Army's golf course and the 297,000 square meters of grass, woods and ponds remain as they were. A 4.6 km path has been built and the area has been further developed with 2,000 additional trees.
Other attractions include the central plaza and the spacious lawn. The park is also a place to study nature. Wild pheasants, Prussian carp, wild ducks, crayfish and other animals live in the park.
At present only the site of the former golf course is open to the public, but by 1997, after the U.S. army moves their base from Seoul, the park will be expanded to 3.5 square kilometers and include a section of the Yongsan and Mt. Namsan area. It will be developed as an integrated rec- reational space to enjoy nature and Korea's proud culture.
