Manila City, the capital of the Philippines, is one of the administrative district of Metro Manila, to be precise. Currently, besides Manila City, Metro Manila is consisted of Quezon City, Pasay City, Caloocan City and 13 other towns.

There are more than 7000 large and small islands in the Philippines, and Manila City is in the southwest of the largest island, Luzon. The city population is up to 1.86 million. In 1571, Manila city thrived as a base of Spanish colony. After a port was opened in 1834, the city rapidly developed through foreign trade. Although Manila City is still the center of politics, economy, and culture, city function is spreading on surrounding cities since Metro Manila was established in 1975.

Rizal Park is in the middle of Manila. Jose Rizal, an activist on an independence movement, was born in a family in the middle class. As he took the degree of Doctor of Medicine, he published some novels such as "NORI-ME-TANHERE", and gave full play to his various talent. Being prosperous, he wasn't active on the movement in the beginning. However, he gradually became conscious of nationality, and in 1892, he formed a moderate organization called Philippine National League which expanded into a revolutionary movement. He objected a violent revolution, but was executed on suspicion of taking part in the armed uprising.
