Lacquer-Coated Works of Art

The lacquer-coated products of Kitakata such as the wooden bowl and the wooden tray are produced in volume. Lacquer-coated goods must be made in an environment free of dust or humidity, making the kura an ideal workshop.

Paulownia (Kiri) Wood

The quality of the Aizu kiri woodcraft is highly known throughout Japan, especially the geta (wooden clogs) and the tansu (closet). The former is known for its lightness and comfortable fit, whereas the latter is known for its excellent resistance to fire.
As an old Aizu saying goes: "When a daughter is born, you should plant a kiri seedling in your backyard. When she marries, cut down the tree and make a kiri closet as a dowry."
