07.01.96 - 1889 World's Fair Carl Malamud Internet Multicasting Service Dear Mr Malamud,
--I had read a long interesting article about the '1996 Internet World's Fair' in the International Herald Tribune during the week (3. or 4. Jan.), and when the name popped up by accident Friday night, I hit it. I cannot refer to the article now because I tossed the paper - a little too soon. What I do remember, is that it said that you put your shoe in a lot of doorways. --In 1989, when France was celebrating its 200th 'Republican' Anniversary, I noted that it was also the 100th Anniversary of the Universal Exposition of 1889 - which in turn lead me to think about 'La Fin de Siècle,' - and End of Millennium - that we are to have, from '89 to '99, or more accurately, until 23:59:59 on December 31, 2000. At the time, in 1989, I launched a project, which is in technical default. Your project, the '1996 Internet World's Fair,' reminded me of it. --By chance, my project faltered back to life in March 1995 in an incomplete form when I began what has become 'Ric's Paris Reports,' carried by the Web site, The Paris Pages. (URL below.) --When I say incomplete, I mean that with 35 years of editorial experience, I find that my one-man effort to bring sort of a 'live' Paris to the Internet suffers from being a bit shorthanded, not to mention unfunded. This is a situation I am trying to alter - and if successful, I will be able to continue, up to and including the much vaster vision of my original '89 to '99 conception. --I think 1996 will see the emergence of a small team joining my effort, which will allow me to focus greater attention on 'content.' In order to attract funding, I will try to place my production on an independent server; while attempting to remain linked to the greater Paris Pages. At the same time, I will be seeking additional editorial producers to broaden the scope of ('new name here'). --For the moment I have only one question. As it now appears, do you think my 'Ric's Paris Reports' section of the Paris Pages, can find an entry to your '1996 Internet World's Fair?' --Whatever your answer, good luck with the project.
--regards, ric
