인도의 교육은 정치.경제정세에 따라 큰 영향을 받아 그때마다 달라진다. 예를 들면 제2차5계년계획(1956-61)때 중공업을 기간 산업으로 하니 사회주의적교육이 실시되어 기초교육의 전환이나 중,고등교육에 힘을 넣었다.
현제는 1980년대의 국민회의파에 의하여 정해진 제도가 운행되어 있다. 10-2-3년제이지만 주에 따라서 5-3-2년제, 4-3-3년제를 실시하고 있다. 초등교육은 전기, 후기로 나누어 그 포급률은 전기 83.7%, 후기 41.9%이다. 공립학교에서는 수업료가 무상이다. 농촌이나 소수부족에 대한 특별한 커리큘럼을 실시하거나 위생, 영양 섭취 계획을 추진하고 있다. 중등교육도 전기, 후기로 나누며 전기는 초등교육의 연장, 후기는 대학진학 코스와 취업교육 코스가 있다. 상당히 과학교육, 영재교육을 하고 있는 것이 이곳의 특징이다. 전기의 취학률은 24.6%이다. 고등교육은 137개의 고등교육기관(1983년)이고 과학기술 분야의 교육, 연구에 힘을 넣고 있다.
