Digital Aesthetics & Digital Japanesque

Thus, the role which the German-based Bauhaus movement played at the beginning of the 20th century is still of vital importance in today's digital society. The new art must encompass the dialogues between past and present and between technology and art; as well as the interface between cyberspace and the world of discrete objects. It must include the new colours and shapes, and it also must depict the new rhythms of people's lives. As collaboration between artists and engineers creates digital aesthetics, which are replacing the manufacturing aesthetics of the Bauhaus, the modern role of aesthetics will be to express the range of our emotions and passions through the new technologies.

In searching the coming "media society" through art and culture, the Research Centre is unique in its approach in exploring aesthetics. Concrete goals of the centre include training the next generation's multimedia creators, the promotion of a Bauhaus-like "Digital Contents" movement, as well as involving industry to establish the role of business in the multimedia society. Through a wide variety of highly-trained staff members and with Kyoto as a focal point of Japanese traditional art and aesthetics, one of the Centre's main projects is "Digital Japanesque", which combines the latest digital arts with traditional Japanese aesthetics. In preparing for the 21st century, we plan to view the technological breakthroughs that engineer social change from the viewpoint of human existence and the new dimensions of artistic creations, coupled with efforts in understanding the new "liaison systems" of society.

Based on these ideas, the Research Centre for Media Aesthetics will continue its work in discovering how media, art and industry will come together to form the new culture, through its joint projects with businesses and research centres from around the world.
