Background & Profile

The Kyoto University of Art and Design combines traditional Japanese art and culture with the new electronic reality in an educational setting. Owing to an educational environment that includes research centres in culture, landscaping, traditional art and theatre; and benefiting from a style that amply reflects the character of Kyoto, the University has gained attention in its efforts to bring together the cultural wealth of traditional Japan with the newest developments of modern society. Using its location at the heart of traditional Japanese art and culture that is Kyoto as a reference, the University has been able to deepen its understanding of art and technology in the multimedia and digital environment.
Combined with the Research Centre for Science of Cultural Property and the Research Centre for Japanese Garden Art, the Research Centre for Media Aesthetics is one of the three centres that comprise the Institute of Art and Culture at the Kyoto University of Art and Design.
