Amagi Local Food

Kawatake

Kawatake (Freshwater Laver)

Kawatake is laver algae harvested from rivers. It is also to botanists known as suizenjinori. It is an excellent food that was been served at the emperor's feast as an offering from Akizuki-Kuroda-han. Kawatake only grows naturally in the River Kogane, which flows across Yanaga in Amagi City. In all Japan, only Amagi City is blessed with a Kawatake harvest.

Akizuki Kudzu

Akizuki Kudzu

Akizuki kudzu (arrowroot), like kawatake, is a delicious food that was once presented by the Akizuki-Kuroda-han to the shogun during the Yedo era and to the emperor during the Meiji era.
Kudzuyu (arrowroot starch gruel) is a favorite of older people during the cold winter and when they catch cold. Kudzumochi, kudzukiri, gomadofu, kudzu-somen, and other foods have been developed as health foods from kudzu. Honkudzu (genuine kudzu) is indispensable in the manufacture of Japanese-style confections. You must try it sometime!
