[Thread Next] Re: Patent Databases
We run a network for Lotus Notes users. Our customers typically don't have Internet connections of their own, so we maintain an Internet connection and operate an SMTP gateway, an FTP mail server, and various other applications to provide our customers with access to the Internet. Several of our customers expressed interest in the Edgar project's SEC filings, so we set up a system to make it easy for them to access the filings. Each night we ftp the SEC index from town.hall.org, and convert it to a Notes database. When our customers want a particular SEC filing, they pull up the database we've created, find the document that refers to the filing they're interested in, and press a button. That sends a message to our FTP mail server, which connects to town.hall.org, retrieves the filing, and mails it back to our customer. This works really well. Our customers get to access information on the Internet without leaving their Notes desktop and the interface they're most comfortable with. It probably even reduces the load on town.hall.org, as we ftp the index just once, and redistribute it to all our customers, which saves them having to ftp it individually whenever they wanted to get updates. You don't get as many malformed requests this way, either. We asked about the patent index because we'd like to do the same thing with the patent archives. It may be that the patent index isn't in a form we can use, but we'd like to see whether it is feasible to do it this way or not. If not, we may instead have to try to implement some sort of Notes front-end to the WAIS engine you have set up. If you'd like more information about our network, check out our web site at http://www.worldcom.com, or call me at (800) 774-2220 x38. Eric
