Apples are the favorite fruit of western folklore and
myth--so much so that a single bite of one of these delectable
tree-rose hips has come to symbolize knowledge itself. And simultaneously,
a fall from a simple life in a state of ignorant grace into our
world of hardship and sin.
But where do apples go when they fall from grace?
Apparently, they go to Eau Claire, Michigan and find an
altogether pleasant home at Tree-Mendus Fruit, Inc., run
by Herb Teichman and his family.
In the nearly one square mile of orchards at Tree-Mendus
they raise more than two
hundred varieties of apples. They also make some of
the finest apple cider, apple butter
and jelly in the world. Cherries, plums, and pears round out
this treasure trove of temperate fruits.
The table below provides links to materials about the fifty or
so varieties we photographed or reviewed. Apple varieties are
listed alphabetically. After the list of apples you'll find a list of
other resources including five episodes of Expo Radio.
