Tae Kwon Do is Korea's very own form of martial art. Tae Kwon do was taught in military arts classes.

During the Koryo period this martial art was called "Soobakhee" and this was not only thought as a martial art but also thought as a sport.

Even during the Chosun dynasty "soobakhee" was done and was widely popular among the commoners also. The rules and ways of the art was written in a book called " Muyaedobotonji" and the rules are still followed today.

During the Japanese occupation, tae kwon do was banned but the patriots used and practiced this and brought it back after Korea's independence on August 15. And on September 16, 1961 Korea Tae Kwon Do Federation came to be. Today tae kwon do is a sport known and peformed globally. In the Sydney Olympics in the year 2000 tae kwon do will be a formal sport.
