The A-Bomb Dome
(formerly Hiroshima Prefectural Products Exhibition Hall)

The atomic bomb was detonated at 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, approximately 150 m southeast of the A-bomb dome at an altitude of about 580 m. The building sustained major damage, its interior was completely burned and all 30 persons who were in the building at that time died. In 1967 the dome was declared a symbol that should remind the people of the world of the terrible disaster. At that time of the A-bomb dome construction work for permanent preservation were carried out.
Currently, attempts are being made to declare this structure also as a world cultural heritage.
