The telegraph relayed investment information quickly over far distances, and was highly valued by some rich entrepreneurs, but standardization was delayed because governments feared that secret information was vulnerable to leaks and confusion. Pigeons still remained the most effective means of transmitting: information was transmitted rapidly and without fail across borders.
