Call waiting service, which enables incoming calls to be answered while another call is in progress, is initiated in Tokyo on November 30, 1970. This service operates on both push-button and rotary dial phones, and is installed by adding special 'Call waiting equipment' on the crossbar type exchange equipment. The service is gradually introduced throughout Japan.
