The Italian Marconi (Guglielmo, 1874 - 1937) invented a radiotelegraph in 1895 (28th year of the Meiji Period) independent of Popov in Russia. Marconi's invention, patented in England, was used in sea rescues. Ships reached the scene within thirty minutes and rescued about 1,700 passengers when a sea disaster occurred in 1909.
