In the early 1900s, many merchant ships, liners and warships were equipped with the wireless. In 1909, the Republic of America and the Florida of Italy collided off the eastern coast of America because of a dense fog. Receiving signals from the Republic, rescue ships arrived at the scene within thirty minutes and about 1,700 passengers are said to have been rescued. This incident attracted worldwide attention and prompted the Italian youth Marconi to make remarkable progress in his enterprise.
