The yearend is the season of the Turner Prize. This event, which is a prize given to the most active artist of the year, started in 1984, and is welcomed with a big fanfare, just like the "Kayo Taisho" (Japanese version of the Grammy Awards) in Japan. The reason for this is due to the airing of this event as a special one-hour program during the peak TV viewing time by Channel 4 every year. According to the director of the Tate Gallery, Nicholas Serota, the "objective of this is to show contemporary art to the general public who do not usually have a chance to see it", and it seems his viewpoint is fully successful. There are four candidates this year; Douglas Gordon, Craigie Horsefield, Gary Hume, and Simon Patterson. Gordon's work is a video piece. Horsefield's is photography of the city. Hume's is a painting. Patterson, characteristic of an artist from the Lisson Gallery, presents a pop object and a humorous simulation work of the subway (underground) line map. Thus, works from each type of media are equally selected. This prize has been won by artists representing England in the '90's, such as Anish Kapoor, Rachel Whiteread, Antony Gormley, and Damien Hirst, who received the prize last year. However, this year, the list of the artists may seem a little subdued. The announcement will be on November 28th. It can also be seen on the Internet.

<<Inside The Visible>>

At the Whitechapel Gallery, an exhibition featuring 37 female artists is being held. This is a good exhibition not only showing famous female artists, but also having a very clear concept. That concept is namely, a ciriticism towards the male-centered and Eurocentric way of thinking, embraced by Modern Art. However, every work is not an aggressive one in which a masculine woman is juxtaposed against a male principle, but rather, it is an attempt to present a different principle, indicating something fragile, yet strong.

Rare works as that of Charlotte Salomon, a Jewish German artist who died in Auschwitz, are also included. The Turner Prize candidate for last year who had higher appraisal than Hirst among the inner circle, Mona Hatoum, exhibits a delicate installation using her own hair, which is quite marvelous.

To Be Held Again This Year in Aoyama

Makoto MURATA

The art exhibition, <<Morphe>>, held along the Aoyama Street last year, will be shown again this year, from November 22 to December 7. The whole town of Aoyama will be used like a gigantic gallery, and more than 60 artists' works will be exhibited in about 50 locations, from showrooms of companies, cafes, to open lots. This year's theme is "Asian Wing". There will be many Asian artists participating, such as Navin Rawanchaikul from Thailand who is planning the "Chiangmai Social Installation".
