Asian Links - Discussion Memo
-----------------------------

"Pacific Bridge" of Internet Railroad is being finalized with USA to Japan/ Korea 45 Mbps links(MCI/KDD/KT). We need to address on links among Asian countries with T1/E1 and T2/E2. There are two ways to approach the issue; bilateral links, and the satellite links proposed by Japan with eight E1 channels. This memo discusses the first approach with the attached memo on the second approach.

The following cities are looking for the Asian links;

Taipei(T1~T3) Manila(T1 in the latter part of 1996) Jakarta(T1?)

Manila and Jakarta in addition to Beijing are also looking into the satellite link to Japan.

It is natural for Japan and Korea to share the above and other Asian links. Since Taipei is ready for the link with T1 and beyond now and Korea will not be ready for T3 link until next spring, it is recommended for Taipei to link to Tokyo. Manila may be connected to Seoul. Others may be considered as the need arises.

Appendix: Recommendation on the E1 satellite links to Japan

China(agreed with Japan) Thailand(AIT) Philippines(PFI with 3 universities) Indonesia(IPTKnet with universities)

Others to be considered are

Korea(KAIST) Hong Kong(HKUST) Sri Lanka(LEARN) (more sites in China)
