Carl, two weeks ago I got the chance to advise the Hungarian govt. on what this superhighway stuff is all about -- I suggested they improve connectivity to the outside world. The net in Hungary is not at all that backward, with a 100Mb FDDI ring connecting the major universities, but the connection to the outside world is a few 64kb lines to the University of Vieanna, CERN and such places, with a 2MB connection to SURFNET planned for October. In brief I suggested that the Hungarian Telco could make 3 fiber pairs available to Vienna (34Mb each) -- a 40 pair cable has been put in place back in '91 and only 8 pairs are actually used -- one for academia, one for commercial internet, and for govt use. The first one could link up with the Ten-34 (Dante) backbone now in the works for Western Europe, terminating the second (which I think of as a seed grant to an infantile industry) should take care of itself, what with US Sprint, CompuServe, and other big players all active in Hungary, and the third, if this makes any sense, should be connected with this Internet Fair backbone of yours. Anyway I hope in a few days this message surfaces from your filters, and you get a chance to read it personally. Answer if you get a chance -- I have the ear of the Hungarian government (more precisely, the leaders of the minority party in the governing coalition, including the current Minister of Culture and Education) and I'm very eager to see the current Hungarian situation improved. Best, Andras PS. You might not remember me, but if you grep deep enough in your old mail files you'll find me as one of the satisfied customers of the CCITT blue book stuff.
