[Thread Next] Changes in the fair
Hi - I've posted a new WhatsNew entry. We've added 86 new pavilions, bringing us to several hundred different groups all participating in the fair. The total number of regions represented has reached 39. Not bad! There are a couple of changes in fair administration that you should all be aware of. As most of you know, the plan here at IMS has been to get our assets out to different groups so at the end of the year Central Park is nice and solid. We've been able to accelerate our schedule and are pleased to announce that Paul Jones and the University of Virginia will be taking over our main facility on April 1. The fair was designed as a distributed organism: our goal was to distribute fundraising and control so that this thing had a chance of working. With hit rates going up to 8 million per day inside of the park.org domain (thanks to IBM's Kasparov v. Deep Blue), the fair is certainly working. A crucial part of making this *continue* to work is to let people take off with the concept, just as our friend in Slovenia has: he's building a great site, has the President of Slovenia involved, and is really going to town. The U.S. has run this fair for the first three months of the year and we put in considerable effort to get the global organization in place while many people have had the luxury of focusing in on their own particular pavilions. To make sure this doesn't become another U.S. imperialistic plot :), I've asked Dr. Rob Blokzijl to take over as Secretary-General on April 1. His group will become the international secretariat and Rob will have overall executive authority for the fair, reporting to the Intl. Exec. Committee for any policy considerations. Our hope is that a Secretary-General from Asia will take over in the early fall and that the fair will have made the rounds from America to Europe to Asia. If for some reason that doesn't happen, Rob is prepared to continue in that position through the rest of the year. I will continue to play an active role in the fair, but after 16 months of intensive work serving as the secretary, I welcome the ability to focus in on some special projects and leave the fair administration in the very capable hands of Rob and his crack team. Regards, Carl
