Mongolia, a Nation of the Great Plain
When Mongol was being invaded by the Jin and the Liao around the12 century, a man by the name of Temujin appeared to save the country and went on to unite all of the Eurasia continent under the Yuan Empire. This man is nonetheless Genghis Khan. What kind of a country is Mongol, where his descendants still live on? |
This country is about 4 times the size of Japan, 1.56 million square kilometers with a population of 2.2 million. The Mongols are a nomadic race and the population is spread over a wide area. The largest concentration of people live in the capital city, Ulaan Baatar, one fourth of the population.
Ulaan Baatar (Red Hero) is located in a shallow basin rimmed by hills.
It is the center of the economy as can be seen by its power consumption,
three fourth of the national electric power consumption.
Within the city you can see a mixture of the old and new like goats grazing on the hillside, gers standing beside tall modern condominiums. You will be surrounded by the great plain after driving your car about 30 or 40 minutes from the city.
Mongolia has a very severe climate. The average temperature in summer is 40 and in winter, it drops to -40. Its annual rainfall is
a mere 200 mm that makes one to nod the existence of the Gobi Desert
which is 2500 km from east to west and 1500 km from north to south and which extends into China. This desert is one of the severest points in this rally.
