For people traveling from the Indus basin which is in the west, to the Ganges basin or the Deccan Plateau, Delhi was quite important. The city was strategically important at the same time. It was constructed in 11th century, and from 16th to 17th century, it thrived as a capital of Mugal Empire. In 1803, India became under the rule of Britain, and the capital moved to Calcutta. In 1912, Delhi revived as a capital city once again, and New Delhi was constructed as a center of administration in 1931.

The city Delhi is also called Old Delhi. It is the center of culture and economy. Gorgeous Court architectures still remains, and shops of arts and crafts can be seen such as embroideries and gold & silver handiwork.

In contrast, there are streets in order and modern architectures in New Delhi. It looks like a city of western Europe. Connote Square is in the North, and many of the high-class shopping center, hotels, and restaurants stand around the square. Main streets radiate in all directions from the Square. The center is a district of central government agencies, and is working as headquarters of political system.
