Emperor Gia Long, who founded the Nguyen Dynasty in 1802 and ruled until 1814 ordered the construction of his tomb in 1814. The tomb is located on the left of Huong river, on Thien Tho mountain which is 16 km from the centre of Hue. In front of the tomb is Dai Thien Tho mountain, a semi-circular shaped lake.
