The Hai Ba Trung Temple, founded in 1142, is 2 km from Hoan Kiem Lake. A statue here shows the two Trung sisters (1st century AD) kneeling with their armes raised, as if to address a crowd. Some people say the statue shows the sisters, who had been proclaimed queens of the Vietnamese, about to dive into a river in order to drown themselves, which they are said to have their done rather than surrender.
