Giac Lam Pagoda dates from 1744 and is believed to be the oldest pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City. To the right of the gate to the pagoda compound are the ornate tombs of venerated monks. There is a bodhi tree in the front garden. Next to the tree is a regular feature of Vietnamese Buddhist temples, a gleaming white statue of Quan The Am Bo Tat (Avalokitecvara, the Goddess of Mercy) standing on a lotus blossom, symbol of purity.
