The General Department of Statistics is the agency belonged to the Government to perform the function of State management regarding statistic activities throughout the country, to provide information in form of statistic data on the socio-economic conditions of Vietnam to organizations, individuals according to the regulations of the Government.

The General Department of Statistics has the following tasks and powers :

• 1. To draw up and submit to the Government draft laws, ordinances, other legal documents on statistics ; to organize the implementation of the above - said documents when they are promulgated by the National Assembly, the Standing Committee of the National Assembly or the Government.
• 2. To submit to the Government development planning, plans of statistics ; to organize the implementation of the above-said plans when the approvals are obtained.
• 3. To issue documents guiding the unified implementation of statistic activities throughout the country.
• 4. To organize the collection, processing, analysis, promulgation of the statistic data on socio-economic conditions of Vietnam according to the regulations of the Government.
• 5. To co-ordinate and assist Ministries, ministerial level agencies, agencies belonged to the Government to define the content, collection methods of statistic data.
• 6. To organize scientific research, application of modern technology in statistic activities, promotion of international co-operation in the field of statistics according to the regulations of the Government. To train statistic cadre.
• 7. To control, supervise Ministries, ministerial level agencies, agencies belonged to the Government , People's Committees , social and economic organizations in the implementation of laws concerning statistic activities.
