Wutuopi Coastal Nature Preserve
Running from Suao in Ilan County in the north to Chungteh in Hualien County in the
south, the Suao-Hualien Highway traverses a region of sheer cliffs rising from the
Pacific Ocean. The section of the coast from Peifang Ao to the mouth of Nanfang
Ao Creek features alternating bays and headlands; one of the most beautiful and
perfectly-formed headlands on this stretch of the coast is Wutuopi. Wutuopi is a
long and narrow cape protruding in an
eastward direction into the Pacific Ocean, and is notable for its very symmetrical
appearance. Wutuopi is formed from a dike of gneiss rock extending in an east-west
direction, and the hardness of the gneiss has left it standing alone in the ocean while
the rock on either side has been eroded into bays. Due to the influence of the northwest
seasonal winds that blow unobstructed here, this part of the coast is damp and rainy
for most of the year. The forest here is largely composed of typical subtropical evergreen
broadleaf species. The nature reserve harbors many bird species; thanks to the
presence of numerous green doves, it has been given the name "Dove Woods."
