Conservation Awareness Materials

Films and Radio Programs

From January to October 1995, the Government Information Office (GIO) produced some 25 wildlife conservation films, including "Return Wildlife to Nature," "Prevention of Forest Fires," "Informing the Authorities of an Unlawful Act" and others which discussed such topics as the environment, freedom, traditional medicine, tonics, pets, consumption behavior, legal trade, traveling and destruction. These films were aired on Taiwan's three network TV stations and other cable TV channels.

The Department of Health (DOH) produced a short film entitled "Protect Bears, Please Use Substitute Medicines." The film was aired on TV. The DOH also plans to produce a short film entitled "Do not Use Bear Gall Bladders Originating from Protected Species."

In June 1995, the GIO produced a radio program on wildlife conservation which was broadcast by five radio stations.

Booklets/Pamphlets

From January to June 1995, the government produced and distributed more than 35,000 copies of the Wildlife Conservation Law and its regulations for implementation.

In June 1995, the Council of Agriculture (COA) produced 1,500 copies of an ivory product identification manual.

Beginning in June 1995, the COA sponsored the Society for Wildlife and Nature (SWAN International) to publish the quarterly "International Conservation Newsletter" in Chinese and English. The Chinese edition aims to introduce and explain international conservation issues and events to Taiwan's conservation community. The English edition relays local conservation issues and efforts to the international community.

In July 1995, the GIO produced 5,000 booklets entitled "Wildlife Conservation in Taiwan, ROC."

In September 1995, the DOH produced 400,000 pamphlets detailing national and international flight schedules which contained messages about bear conservation.

In October 1995, the COA produced 5,000 sea turtle drawing booklets which illustrate the ecology and conservation of sea turtles.

Posters/Stickers/Others

In February 1995, the DOH produced 15,000 stickers to urge the public not to use bear gall bladders from protected species. These stickers were distributed among the traditional Chinese medicine community.

Between May and July 1995, the government produced 31,000 conservation posters featuring wildlife conservation, Taiwan's stream ecosystem and tree frog conservation.

In July 1995, the DOH sponsored the Beautiful Taiwan Foundation to produce 30,000 copies of "Save the Tigers" stickers and leaflets.

In September 1995, the Ministry of Education (MOE) sponsored the printing of the "Save the Tigers" stickers and sent 10,012 "Save the Tigers" stickers and leaflets to 3,254 primary and junior high schools.

In October 1995, the DOH produced 400,000 phone cards featuring "Protected Bear Species" to promote public awareness on the issue.

Advertisements

Since May 1994, the GIO has rented seven computer billboards in three cities to enhance public awareness of wildlife conservation. Conservation messages are displayed every day.

From July to October 1995, to publicize the registration and marking campaign for ivory tusks, the following campaign was launched:

1) Two television commercials were broadcast on the three network TV stations and cable TV programs. 2) 680 banners were distributed. 3) A wall advertisement was posted in the CKS International Airport. 4) 150,000 fliers were produced.

Conservation Workshops and Activities Training Programs

From December 1994 to October 1995, the MOE sponsored 185 conservation education workshops targeting teachers, school administrative personnel, directors and principals. Some 8,000 persons participated.

From January to October 1995, some 16 conservation awareness or training workshops were held targeting government officers and the general public.

Exhibits and Activities

From January to October 1995, more than nine conservation exhibitions were held in Taiwan. These exhibits featured nature conservation, wildlife conservation, man and the environment, conservation and restoration of the landlocked salmon, plant species endemic to Taiwan, rare animal species in Taiwan and other topics.

From January to October 1995, more than 13 conservation-related activities were held in Taiwan. These activities included "Adopt and Care for Chimpanzees," "Care for the Animals," "River Ecosystem Tour," "Planting the Kandelia Mangrove," "Migratory Bird Watching" and "1995 Environmental Protection Summit in Taiwan."

Workshops and Meetings

From January to October 1995, more than 69 conservation-related workshops or meetings were held. The topics included wildlife regulations, wetland conservation, landscape conservation, management of protected areas, wildlife marking system, registration and marking of ivory tusks, animal behavior, conservation of Cetacea, bat ecology, raptor ecology, mangrove ecosystem, conservation education and others.
