While not officially designated a nature preserve until 1992, Chuyushan has been protected since 1974 and is the oldest recognized reserve region in the national forests. Unlike some of the smaller preserves, which have been designated primarily to protect a single species, Chuyushan has been set aside for its rich diversity of plants and animals. Some of the animals of this mountain area include the Formosan black bear, the Mikado Pheasant, and the Formosan rock monkey. Some of the more rare plants include the Alishan cherry, Stout Camphor tree, and Taiwan Osmanthus. | |
