Internet has transformed the world.

In traditional society, technology was undeveloped, transportation inconvenient, communication difficult, and civilization advanced slowly.

Seeking better lives, human beings ceaselessly strove to invent new technologies that would enable more efficient production and an improved living environment.

The printing press, the telephone, the computer...the emergence of each new communications technology began a revolution in human affairs.

All world expositions held during the twentieth century have displayed the achievements of human civilization and spurred people to continue searching for ways to bring about a brighter future. Moreover, the exhibitions also left their own monuments to history, such as turn-of-the-century Paris' Eiffel Tower . Another such monument is Expo 64's Flusing Meadow in New York.

In recent years the information revolution set off by digital technology has begun a great transformation of people's lifestyles. On the eve of the twenty-first century, the question that faces us is how to welcome the information age and continue to build human civilization.

EXPO 96: THE CENTRAL PARK OF INTERNET

It has been predicted that twenty-first century will be the century of the Internet, in this case the opening of the Internet World Exposition will be a milestone marking the beginning of a new era.

The Internet World Exposition, also known as Expo 96, is based on the following principle: Just as model cities all have a central park, so the Internet World Exposition will become the central park of Internet. All sorts of popular and cultural activities will then gradually develop outward from this central park.

The Internet World Exposition let most networks around the world linked together and form an on-line global village. Because the Republic of China recognizes it is a member of the global village, it is very willing to make a contribution to Expo 96 and thereby discharge its responsibility to the citizens of the world.

The R.O.C.'s information products have long held a leading place in world markets, and the R.O.C. ranked third in output of information industry in 1995. Moreover, the R.O.C. is the world's leading maker of the eyes, brains, hands, and hearts of computers---monitors, mainboards, mice, and power supplies.

We will continue to develop and market outstanding products, and in light of the growing use of the Internet, will supports the movement towards a GII (Global Information Infrastructure).

Apart from its information industry, our nation also has an excellent record in political, economical and societal development.

Our successes have made a positive difference in the everyday life of R.O.C. citizens, and we are willing contribute our experience to the rest of the world via Internat.

THE TAIWAN, R.O.C. PAVILION

There is no limit to the breadth of applications to which the Internet may be put; for an example, just go to the Taiwan pavilion and take a look at the Wang household.

Mr. Wang can browse the industry pavilion and learn more about market conditions or go to the transportation & communications pavilion and check up on airline schedules.

Mrs. Wang can check up on some artistic activities in culture pavilion or visit the government & public services pavilion in order to find out more about the nation's policies.

Their son Wang Hsiao-min can visit the science pavilion and peruse the latest scientific knowledge.

Their daughter Wang Hsiao-ying, can consult library materials and study English in the education pavilion.

Everyone can also participate in many kinds of special events and be personally on the spot.

Using the Internet's lifestyle applications will make your life even more convenient.

SIGHTSEEING OF OTHER PAVILIONS IN THE WORLD

Apart from the R.O.C. pavilion, the Internet puts the whole at your fingertips, and lets you travel and experience the sights and sounds of many places without ever leaving the convenience of your home.

Because of the Internet's epochal significance, the U.S., U.K., the R.O.C., Russia, and other major nations are supporting the Internet Expo 96.

JOIN TOGETHER FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE

Just as the world leaders mentioned, in the future the Internet will be able to play a role in every aspect of business world.

Starting from business activities, we will advance into electronic banking and electronic commerce.

As far as education is concerned, we can look forward to distance learning and lifelong education via the Internet.

In the area of government services, we will be able to take advantage of one-stop service and on-line transfer of documentation.

As for lifestyle, soon we will be able tour a virtual museum and enjoy video-on-demand.

We believe that through the common efforts of many nations around the world, even more important applications of the Internet will be found in the areas of business, education, government service, and lifestyle, helping lead us further towards an ideal world.
