Early Snow on the River (two sections)

Chao Kan was born at Nanking in Kiangsu province and trained in the Academy of Art of the Southern T'ang court. He was a versatile painter and excelled in landscapes of Chiangnan. Critics have praised him, saying he had so thoroughly absorbed the essence of natural beauty and grandeur that there was never a trace of worldliness in his landscapes. The painting depicts fishermen on a river and some travelers wending their ways along the rivershore on a cold wintry day.
