The Cold Food Observance

Su Shih (A.D. 1036 1101), Sung dynasty (A.D. 960-1279)
Ink on paper. Semi-cursive script. Handscroll. 33.5 x 118 cm

Su Shih (style name Tzu-chan and sobriquet Tung-p'o chu-shih) was a man of extraordinary talents. He excelled in all of the traditional pursuits of the Chinese gentleman scholar. This scroll is considered as the best of Su Shih's works. It was written in his late years and clearly displays the simple, plain, and natural beauty of the Sung calligraphers.
