Redwood ju-yi scepter inlaid with semi-precious stones

Ch'ing dynasty (A.D. 1644-1911)
Length: 53.3 cm Width: 15.0 cm

Made of redwood, this ju-yi scepter has a design ground of gold filigree and kingfisher feathers, over which have been applied numerous motifs constructed of carved semi-precious stones including fei-ts'ui or jadeite, coral, tourmaline, and amethyst. A yellow tassel embellishes one end. This is a luxurious example of fine imperial craftsmanship.
