Images from the Sea
Nautical
themes have a natural attraction to people
living on tiny specks of coral in the midst
of a vast sea. Cayucas (top left), local
steamers (bottom left) and fish stories (bottom center)
are illustrated on these molas.
The designs of the molas to the left reduce nautical images to abstractions.
At the far left anchors are depicted in a tatoo-like style
recalling the origin of molas as body painting.
Could the mola at the center represent four brightly colored
univalve shells found on a Caribbean coral beach?
