Images from the Sea
Nautical themes have a natural attraction to people living on tiny specks of coral in the midst of a vast sea. Cayucas (top left), local steamers (bottom left) and fish stories (bottom center) are illustrated on these molas.
|The designs of the molas to the left reduce nautical images to abstractions. At the far left anchors are depicted in a tatoo-like style recalling the origin of molas as body painting. Could the mola at the center represent four brightly colored univalve shells found on a Caribbean coral beach?|
