Udder

The linear descriptive udder traits are scored, while the cow is standing; the overall udder score is given when the cow is walking. In this way additional information can be obtained about the overall attachment of the udder. The determination of the total score of the udder is based on the six linear descriptive udder traits and other udder traits, which are not linear scored. These are, amongst others, udder texture or quality, veining of the udder, length of the udder floor and udder balance. By taking these traits also into account, the classifier gives a most complete judgement when scoring the total udder. Much emphasis is given to teat placement, suspensory ligament and udder depth, since these traits have the greatest influence on the longevity and workability of the udder. For first-lactating heifers some reservation is made in scoring udders; all scores between 65 and 89 points are possible. Older cows can get more points for udder. The average score of the udders classified is contant over the years and has been put at 80 points.

The lineair descriptive udder traits fore udder attachment, teat length and udder depth are considered to be optimum traits. This means that a higher score for these traits does not necessarily lead to a more positive contribution to the total score for the udder.
