Teat length

Teat length is scored on basis of the length of the front teats. The longer the front teats, the higher the score (see bottom part of figure 3). A score of 1 is given to front teats with a length of 2 cms or less. If the length of the front teats is 8 cms or longer, then a score of 9 is awarded for teat length.

The relation between teat length and culling rate

Teat length is given less emphasis than udder depth, teat placement and suspensory ligament in scoring total udder. Teats of about 5 cms length are preferred, which corresponds with a teat length score of 5. Besides the size, the shape of the teats has an effect on the ease of milking. Plumb teats are ideal, whereas pointed, thin teat are less desired in regard to milking speed, especially if teats are longer. Figure 3 indicates that teat length is an optimum trait in regard to herdlife. A teat length score of 9 (very long) is not preferred due to the higher incidence of teat damage.
