Transportation and assembly of retaining wall

The sections were transported from Krimpen aan den IJssel and Schiedam by pontoon. A floating derrick first lifted the buoyancy chamber from the pontoon in the parking dock; the upper chamber was then placed on top. The hoisting of the upper chamber was particularly spectacular as it had to be tilted through 90 degrees. The two sections were placed on "multiwheels": heavy semi-trailers with 24 pairs of wheels drove the sections further into the parking dock. The chambers were then transferred to a special load- bearing structure and placed in their final location, for welding to the sections already in position. The welding together of two sections (i.e. an upper chamber and a buoyancy chamber) took about five weeks.
