SUH WON

A suh-won was a place where scholars would worship and commemorate patriots and other scholars who had gone before them.

It was a place of learning and worship, therefore was situated in a quiet region. Suh-won's were found on the foot of mountains, country viIlages or old temples.

Suh-won's facilities were divided into a lecture hall, auditorium, and an ancestral sacrificial shrine.

The education institutions were in the front part of the Suh-won, and the sacrificial rites were held in the rear. From the front and in order, the main gate, storied building, auditorium, gate, ancestral shrine were placed. Educational facilities were constructed on the left and right side of the auditorium.

The architectural structure were soft and simple and the rooms were not considered large.

In the beginning, Suh-won's stressed their emphasis on learning, but after l7OO much was focused on ancestral worship. In 1900 suh-won's were mostly made up of ancestral shrines and auditoriums.
