The Year of Literature
Update on the Year of Literature Under the motto "Let's all experience the joy of literature", on January 19, 1996 the Year of Literature became under way for the people to experience mental merit. Knowing the importance all over the world, without cultural power there can be no nation power. Therefore after 1995's Year of Art, Korea decided to call 1996 the Year of Literature. Knowing our own literature, we will be able to identify with ourselves and show the world our pride. Our strength in mind can be made clear through literature. 1996 being the Year of Literature, we have planned events for everyone to enjoy.
Schedules for Events Korea's modern literature 100 years, finding the cycle. time: 1996 June 25 - July 7 place: Ilmin cultural Hall (former dong-a ilbosa) Celebrating 100 years in literature, a place to meet our writers. In this exhibition you will see the manuscript of our writers, and see a video on them. This is a place where you can catch a glimpse and become closer to our literature. Also displayed are the pictures of our 209 most famous literary members. Calligraphy, hand-written manuscripts, letters, postcards and signatures are also to be shown. Also you will be able to see the changes of our literature througout history.
Literature camp for writers and readers time: 1996 July 27 -29 place: Kangwondo Pyongchang Doonnae Youth Hostel Members of the committee for the '96 Year of Literature will sponsor this event and the Ministry of Culture and Korea Art Culture Promotion Corp, will support it. 300 readers and 40 writers and readers will participate in this program. Classes on creativity, literature will be available. There will be contests and the winner will have the privilige of passing try outs in other contests.
'96 Year of Literature Poetry Festival time: 1996 July 2 - 15 place: Seochodong's National Central Library (Exhibition Hall) Poetry represents a significant part of our literature. Starting from the 80's and continuing in the 90's, poetry has been down shadowed by commercialism and video. The crisis of literature, especially that of poetry means the emergency of our values. Therefore the main 100 poets from around the nation concerned of this crisis, will come together and talk about this with the public. National Poetry Recitation Contest time: preliminary contest 1996 May 1 August 31 place: Ho Am Art Hall Promoted by local literature groups and committies. Year of Literature Commemoration drama time: 1996 December 11 - 15 place: Literary Arts Theater Sponsored by Korea Playwrights Association. Literature Relic Designation Material survey: Hamdongsun (Korea Poetry Institute) Sponsored by the Ministry of culture this event will be held in July and August. |
