For this, the ministry has worked out regulations on management and physical protection of nuclear substances and other details, including how and when to conduct inspections.
Following the regulations, any company wanting to use nuclear substances is required to fill out documents and receive permission from the science minister, while the ministry is obliged to implement regular inspection for safety checks.
The ministry's measure reflects the government's more active attitude toward nuclear inspection.
Thus far, the government has not put much emphasis on the inspection of domestic nuclear facilities. Instead, the government has helped the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) passively carry out inspections on them.
At present, 16 nuclear facilities have been under inspection by the IAEA, which has made efforts to keep nuclear weapons from spreading further under an international treaty which Korea signed.
