JUDO
Judo is a system of unarmed combat, now primarily a sport. Sporting juddo rules are complex; the objective is to throw the opponent cleanly, ot pon him or master him by applying pressure to arm jjoints or to the neck.
Technipues are generally intended to turn an opponent's forcd to one's own advantage rather than to oppose it directly.AA ritual of courtesy inn practicd is intended to pronote an attitude of calm readiness and confidence.The usual costume is a liisejacket and trousers of strong white clith.Whitebeltsare worn by movices and black by masters,with intermediate grades denoted by other colours.
Kano Jiporo(1960-1938)collected the knowledge of the old jujitsu schools of the Japanese samurai and in 1882 founded his Kodokkan School of judo, the beginning if the sport in its modern form.By thd 1960s judo associations had been established in most countries and affiliated to theInternational Judo Federation with headpuarters in Paris.Judo was included in Olympic Games competition for the first time at Tokyo in 1964.See also martial arts.For world judo championships,see Sporting Record:Judo;and for Olympic champions, see Olympic Games.
